The Rarity of Aces in Golf

​The hole-in-one ranks among the most unlikely occurrences in all of sports. According to the National Hole-in-One Registry, the average golfer has a one in 12,500 chance of hitting a hole-in-one, also known as an ace. This works out to a recreational golfer playing 18 holes of golf every day for two years before landing an ace.

American golf courses, however, report slightly better numbers, skewed by low-handicap golfers. Each course reports between 10 and 15 aces per year, or one hole-in-one every 3,500 rounds. Even so, as few as one percent of golfers finish their careers with an ace, and most golfers play the sport for at least 24 years before managing a hole-in-one. About half of the aces landed each year are hit by players between the ages of 40 and 59.

Despite the incredible odds against aces, amateur and moderately skilled golfers should not give up. Data suggests that the average handicap of golfers who hit aces is 14, slightly below the 14.2 average handicap for American male golfers, according to the United States Golf Association. Women comprise 16 percent of aces hit annually, at an average age of 55.
